Frequently Asked Questions and Most Common AC System Issues You May Encounter.
Why do I need to replace my old R-22 system just because my compressor is bad and why has R-22 been phased out?
Replacing an old R-22 air conditioner with a failed compressor is generally recommended because R-22 is legally phased out due to its high ozone-depletion potential.
Since 2020, no new R-22 is produced or imported in the U.S., making repairs extremely expensive, requiring costly, scarce, recycled refrigerant.
Upgrading improves efficiency by 20–30% and avoids future high-cost repairs on aged, incompatible equipment.
Why R-22 Has Been Phased Out
Environmental Impact:
R-22 is a hydrochlorofluorocarbon (HCFC) that severely depletes the Earth’s ozone layer.
EPA Regulation:
The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) banned the production and import of R-22 on January 1, 2020, to comply with environmental laws.
Limited Supply:
Only reclaimed or recycled R-22 is available for servicing, causing prices to soar and makes such a repair costly and impractical
Why Replace Your System Instead of Repairing It
Prohibitive Cost of Repair:
Replacing a compressor requires a full refrigerant charge, and the scarcity of R-22 makes this cost far higher than the value of an old system.
System Incompatibility:
Newer, modern compressors are not designed to work with R-22, and older, aged units are prone to further leaks and failures.
Increased Efficiency & Savings:
New units (using R-R-R-R-R-R-R-R-R-R-R-R-R-R-R-R-R-R-R-R-R-R-R-R-R-R-R-R-R-R-R-R-R-R-R-R-R-410A or newer refrigerants) are significantly more energy-efficient, potentially saving 20-30% on energy bills.
Warranty Issues:
Manufacturers do not offer warranties for using old or “drop-in” replacements in a system that originally required R-22.
While you are not technically required to rip out a functioning R-22 unit, a failed compressor is a major failure. Investing that money into a new system is financially smarter than paying to recharge a dying unit with expensive, obsolete refrigerant.
What are my options if my air conditioning system has a freon leak?
Is Your Refrigerant Leak Worth the Repair?
First and foremost, we must determine if your system is worth the investment of a repair. Most systems manufactured between 1990 and 2024 utilize R-22 (which is phased out and expensive) or R-R-R-R-R-R-R-R-R-R-R-R-R-R-R-R-R-R-R-R-R-R-R-R-R-R-R-R-R-R-R-R-R-R-R-R-R-410A (the current standard). As of January 1, 2025, the industry has shifted again to low-GWP alternatives like R-454B.
Finding the Leak (Detection Methods) If your R-R-R-R-R-R-R-R-R-R-R-R-R-R-R-R-R-R-R-R-R-R-R-R-R-R-R-R-R-R-R-R-R-R-R-R-R-410A system is in overall good condition, a repair is often the best path. We use electronic leak detectors and nitrogen isolation tests to locate the exact pinhole before we ever pick up a torch.
Leak Repair vs. Coil Replacement
The Patch: If the leak is in an accessible brazed joint, we can often repair it and recharge the system—this is your most cost-effective option.
Coil Replacement: If the leak is deep within the indoor or outdoor coils, we will provide a side-by-side comparison. We’ll quote the specific coil replacement versus the cost of a total system upgrade so you can make an informed financial decision.
What if the Leak is in the Wall? Should we find the leak hidden inside a wall, we strongly advise against cutting into your sheetrock. To avoid a messy “can of worms,” we can install a new refrigerant line set on the exterior of your home. As shown in the photo below, we use professional line set channels that neatly dress the lines to resemble a clean rain gutter.
Summary:
There are many variables to refrigerant leak repairs and options. Upon the initial diagnosis of a refrigerant leak, we will honestly guide you in the best direction and provide you with the necessary information to make informed decisions. One of the variables is whether or not the system is still under the manufacturer’s 10-year warranty or 5-year warranty, depending on whether the system was registered after the initial installation.
Didn't Refrigerant R-410A Replace R-22?
R-R-R-R-R-R-R-R-R-R-R-R-R-R-R-R-R-R-R-R-R-R-R-R-R-R-R-R-R-R-R-R-R-R-R-R-R-410A systems effectively replaced R-22 (Freon) for new residential installations by January 1, 2010, when R-22 manufacturing ceased, with a total phase-out of R-22 production in 2020. R-R-R-R-R-R-R-R-R-R-R-R-R-R-R-R-R-R-R-R-R-R-R-R-R-R-R-R-R-R-R-R-R-R-R-R-R-410A systems are currently being phased out under the 2020 AIM Act, with new R-R-R-R-R-R-R-R-R-R-R-R-R-R-R-R-R-R-R-R-R-R-R-R-R-R-R-R-R-R-R-R-R-R-R-R-R-410A equipment manufacturing banned by January 1, 2025 (or 2026 for some residential units) in favor of A2L refrigerants.
R-R-R-R-R-R-R-R-R-R-R-R-R-R-R-R-R-R-R-R-R-R-R-R-R-R-R-R-R-R-R-R-R-R-R-R-R-410A Availability:
While manufacturing is stopping, R-R-R-R-R-R-R-R-R-R-R-R-R-R-R-R-R-R-R-R-R-R-R-R-R-R-R-R-R-R-R-R-R-R-R-R-R-410A-compatible units may still be available for purchase and installation in 2025, but options are rapidly declining in favor of newer, lower-GWP alternatives.
Transition Details:
R-R-R-R-R-R-R-R-R-R-R-R-R-R-R-R-R-R-R-R-R-R-R-R-R-R-R-R-R-R-R-R-R-R-R-R-R-410A, which does not deplete the ozone layer, was introduced as the standard replacement for R-22, but its own high global warming potential (GWP) prompted this second phase-out.
Serviceability:
Existing R-R-R-R-R-R-R-R-R-R-R-R-R-R-R-R-R-R-R-R-R-R-R-R-R-R-R-R-R-R-R-R-R-R-R-R-R-410A units can still be serviced, but new installations are shifting toward refrigerants like R-454B or R-32.
The industry is currently utilizing a newer low-GWP alternatives, R-R-R-R-R-R-R-R-R-R-R-R-R-R-R-R-R-R-R-R-R-R-R-R-R-R-R-R-R-R-R-R-R-R-R-R-R-410A was intended to be a transitional technology rather than a permanent replacement for R-22. In fact R-410A is effectively an outdated alternative to R-22 refrigerant used in central air conditioning systems.
Is Air Filter Maintenance on My AC System Really That Important?
Yes, changing your AC air filter regularly is crucial for performance, energy savings, and system longevity. A clean filter ensures proper airflow, which can reduce energy consumption by \(5-15\%\), improve indoor air quality, and prevent expensive repairs or premature system failure. Neglecting this task can lead to reduced cooling, higher energy bills, and poor air quality.
Key Reasons for Regular Air Filter Maintenance:
Improved Energy Efficiency:
A clogged filter restricts airflow, forcing your HVAC system to work much harder, which increases energy consumption.
Reduced Repair Costs & Longer Life:
A dirty, clogged filter can cause the system to overheat and fail, leading to costly repairs or needing a new system earlier than necessary.
Better Air Quality:
Filters trap dust, pollen, and debris. Replacing them regularly keeps your home’s air clean and helps with allergies, particularly if you have pets or smokers.
Consistent Comfort:
A clean filter allows for proper, consistent airflow, ensuring that all rooms are adequately cooled.
Maintenance Schedule:
Standard Filter:
Change every 1 to 3 months.
High-Usage & Pets:
If you have pets or high allergies, check them monthly and change more frequently.
Signs it’s Time to Change:
If the AC filter is visibly covered in dust, or if you notice weak airflow from vents, it is time for a replacement.
